Folk singer Freddie Aguilar said he had urged his sister, Marlene Aguilar-Pollard, that it would be better to surrender her son Jason Ivler to authorities rather than put him in danger by not doing so.
In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS, the world-renowned folk singer said: “Sabi ko no’n kay Marlene na isuko na niya si Jason dahil mas madali ang gano’n kaysa naman sa nangyari sa pamangkin ko. Kaya lang, hindi niya ako sinunod. Ngayon, ganyan ang nangyari."
Aguilar said he is sad over what happened to his nephew, who was captured by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Monday morning in Marlene's house in Blue Ridge, Quezon City.
He said he was in a state of disbelief when he learned that Jason had to fight back with lawmen during the incident.
“I feel very depressed and sad about what happened to Jason. But I think we should be objective about the whole thing,” he said in an interview at Ka Freddie’s Bar in Malate Tuesday evening.
“Until now, I can’t really release an official statement about the case because I don’t have any full knowledge of what happened,” he said.
Ivler is the prime suspect in the killing of Renato Victor Ebarle, Jr., son of Malacañang official Renato Victor Ebarle, Sr. over a traffic altercation in November last year.
Ivler, a Fil-Am, went into hiding and was hunted down by law enforcers after the bloody incident.
Marlene, younger sister of Freddie, had denied in past interviews that she had knowledge of her son’s whereabouts.
Freddie recalled that Jason had denied the accusations thrown at him.
“Ang sabi kasi sa akin ni Jason no’n na wala siyang kinalaman sa mga ibinibintang sa kanya,” he said.
Freddie said he hasn’t talked to Marlene yet after Ivler's capture.
Is he close to Jason?
“Hindi ko masasabing close, hindi ko rin naman masasabing hindi. Kasi, sa Amerika siya lumaki, e. Sundalo siya ng American government sa Iraq,” Freddie said.
“Mas close ako sa kanyang kapatid na si Kolby na anak ni Marlene sa second husband niya na si David. Close din ako kay Maya na anak naman niya kay (Stephen) Pollard,” he added.
