Superferry 9: DOTC "show cause" order against ship captain. In Manila, Philippines, the Department of Transportation and Communication today issued a show cause order against the ship captain of the sunken Superferry 9, a radio report said.
DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza will summon Capt. Joel Yap of the ill-fated passenger vessel for Yap to explain the circumstances behind the sinking of the vessel off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula early this morning. A special Board of Marine Inquiry will probe into the incident.
Rescue teams of the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy and private cargo ships have already recovered 880 passengers, including five persons who drowed while 88 are still missing.
Superferry 9 was built in Japan in 1986, according to Aboitiz Shipping Lines records.
