25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship 2009: Powerade-Team Pilipinas competes. Powerade-Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao thinks his squad will “do well in China” as it competes in the 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship. “Through this one week, we made necessary adjustments. The patterns we made and the mentality on the physical contacts of the game,” Guiao said.
“They’ve adjusted to it, and it’s satisfactory given the limited time,” added Guiao. The RP team left for Tianjin, China Tuesday morning. It will play against Sri Lanka on Thursday, Japan on Friday, and South Korea on Saturday.
The team is headlined by Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Sonny Thoss, Jayjay Helterbrand, Willie Miller, Kerby Raymundo, James Yap, Arwind Santos, Gabe Norwood, Cyrus Baguio, Japeth Aguilar and Jared Dillinger.
Yap, however, did not go to China with his team because he will attend the burial of his mother-in-law, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino, on Wednesday. Yap vowed to join his teammates for their first game on Thursday. The RP team recently finished at sixth place in the William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei, Taiwan.
In 2007, the RP team members were the ninth placers in the Olympic qualifying FIBA Asia tournament held in Tokushima, Japan.
