Pacquiao-Clottey Result

Pacquiao-Clottey Result. Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines celebrates his 12-round unanimous decision win over Ghana's Joshua Clottey following their WBO welterweight championship fight at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, March 13, 2010.

Pacquiao punished Clottey with combinations to the body throughout in winning the unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight title and his status as the world’s finest boxer.

It was no contest, as Clottey simply kept his guard high and rarely threw punches. According to CompuBox, Pacquiao landed 246 of 1,231 punches. Clottey connected on just 108 of 399.

Pacquiao took advantage by using his blazing hand speed to rip through Clottey’s gloves and land hard, punishing shots.

He made the former champion wince several times as he fired off hard combinations at Clottey’s midsection.

Despite the exhortations in the corner of trainer Lenny DeJesus, Clottey never opened up and fought aggressively. He was backed up all night and, except for an occasional shot, never did much to Pacquiao.

It was another virtuoso performance for the Filipino superstar, who has won titles or has claimed the linear championship in seven different weight classes. Pacquiao is on a collision course with unbeaten rival Floyd Mayweather Jr., who fights Shane Mosley on May 1.

According to CompuBox, Pacquiao outpunched Clottey 1,239 to 399 and outlanded him 246-108.

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight, Las Vegas site

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight, Las Vegas site. The Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight did land in Las Vegas on March 13, 2010.

“As far as we know it’s always been Vegas,” said Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, yesterday when news broke out that promoters have already agreed to stage the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Koncz, who was with Pacquiao yesterday afternoon, said he expects an announcement to come very soon as to the final details of the fight that is scheduled to take place on March 13.

The state-of-the-art Cowboys Stadium in Dallas made a spirited bid to host the fight, probably the biggest in boxing history, and owner Jerry Jones reportedly made a $25 million offer to get it there.

But Vegas is just the place to hold a fight of this magnitude.

“There’s no other place to hold it than Vegas. With all the casinos and the high-rollers coming over, it’s just hard to match. Nasa Vegas ang pera (The money is in Vegas),” said Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal.

“It’s the MGM. It’s definite,” an article that came out of fanhouse.com quoted a source as saying, and that the choice was based on both fighters’ “familiarity with the location as well as their past success there.”

According to reports, the MGM Grand could generate as much as $28 million in live-gate sales. Also in store are 40,000 closed-circuit seats through MGM/Mirage properties, and at $100 a head could present a total package of $32 million.

And that’s enough to quash Dallas’ $25 million offer.

Pacquiao has fought six times at the MGM Grand, winning four (against Lehlo Ledwaba, Oscar dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto), losing once to Erik Morales and drawing once with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather, on the other hand, has fought six times at the MGM during his unbeaten run of 40 fights. His wins at MGM came against Gregorio Vargas, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Dela Hoya, Hatton and Marquez.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight is expected to generate more than $100 million, and both fighters, guaranteed of at least $25 million each, could get as much as $40 million when everything comes in.

A press conference, a major one, is scheduled Jan. 6 in New York and two days after another one will take place in Los Angeles. There will be no press tour for this fight which the whole world wants to see.

The fight is set at 147 lb and Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight crown, which he took from Cotto last month, will be at stake. They will use 8-ounce gloves, and both camps have also agreed to random drug testing weeks leading to the fight.

There’s no confirmation whether both fighters have signed the fight contract, but now that it’s all been agreed upon, there’s no reason for them to hold back and get it done.

Manny Pacquiao featured cover in Time Magazine

Manny Pacquiao featured cover in Time Magazine. Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino ring icon is the latest fighter to make it to the list of professional boxers to be featured in the cover of well-respected magazine Time.

Like professionals boxers Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Frazier, Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali appears on Time Magazine Asia.

This also makes Pacquiao the second Filipino to grace Time’s cover after former President and democracy icon Corazon Aquino, who was named the magazine’s "Woman of the Year" in 1986.

Apart from heavyweights Louis, Schmeling, Frazier, Ali and middleweight Robinson, other boxers who had made it to the magazine’s cover include heavyweights Jack Dempsey, Primo Carnerra, Gene Tunney and the controversial Mike Tyson.

In its latest Asia edition issue, Time pays homage to the General Santos City-based southpaw in a story titled “The Meaning of Manny,” which branded the Filipino spitfire as “the latest savior of boxing.”

The story delves into Pacquiao’s stature as the Philippines’ favorite son, his humble beginnings, recent ring accomplishments, among others.

The same magazine previously included Pacquiao in its list of 100 most influential people in the world, with former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis providing a brief write-up on him.

Pacquiao is set to collide with Puerto Rican bomber Miguel Cotto for a record seventh world title in as many weight classes. The fight, dubbed “Firepower,” is scheduled on Nov. 14 (Nov. 15 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sources: Philstar News

Manny Pacquiao over Ricky Hatton

Manny Pacquiao over Ricky Hatton

The odds favoring Manny Pacquiao over Ricky Hatton went a notch higher barely four weeks left before their big match at the MGM Grand.

From -225 when the betting lines officially opened last Feb. 7, the hard-hitting Pacquiao is now a -250 favorite, meaning you need to put in $250 just to win a hundred bucks.

Hatton, despite being the champion who will defend his IBO light-welterweight crown on May 2, stood still as the +185 underdog, meaning your $100 wager wins $185.

Hatton was the same +185 underdog when the lines opened exactly two months ago.

The odds that the fight will not go over nine-and-a-half rounds are also low at -155 while the odds that the fight will end earlier than that, as predicted, are at +125.

Over the Internet, ticket prices have sky-rocketed with Floor E, Row A seats, the best in the house, being peddled and sold for as much as $8,330 and $8,950 or roughly P400,000. On the booths, they are pegged as high as $1,000 to as low as $150.

But Bob Arum of Top Rank said only less than 600 of the 16,300 tickets remain on sale, and should be “sold out” by this week.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said he’d be “very disappointed” if Hatton lasts longer than the first three rounds, a prediction that was matched by the British camp.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., Hatton’s trainer, said Pacquiao could be out of it earlier than that.

Meanwhile, Team Pacquiao laughed off as rumors a very recent post at mannypacquiao.ph that the Pinoy pound-for-pound champion hurt his foot during roadwork.

“Let them be,” said Pacquiao’s LA-based wingman Winchell Campos when asked to verify the report that the boxer hurt his right foot during his morning workout.

Yesterday, a Sunday in Los Angeles, Pacquiao heard Mass at the Christ the King Church, but skipped his routine jog at Griffith Park.

In another development, WBC and WBC junior-welterweight champion Timothy Bradley called on the winner between Pacquiao or Hatton, moments after he defeated Hendall Halt the other day.

“I want the big dogs. I want the winner of Hatton and Pacquiao, definitely. If I can’t get them, I want (Juan Manuel) Marquez. I want to be the star of the (140 lb) division,” eastasideboxing reported. - By Abac Cordero

Pacquiao vs De La Hoya

De La Hoya should make short work of Pacquiao

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

September 2, 2008

Puzzling, I would say. Oscar De La Hoya, wanting a signal triumph as a final footnote to his distinguished career, chooses to engage a guy nowhere near his size.

De La Hoya's opponent on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas: Manny Pacquiao. A champion in five weight classifications, Pacquiao is a fiery little fellow. Underscore “little.” When he began boxing in 1995, Pacquiao was fighting at 107 pounds. His match against De La Hoya is at 147, which is 12 pounds more than Pacquiao has weighed for any of his appearances. Neither at a listed 5 feet 6½ does he have the height to deal with De La Hoya.

If his legacy is his concern, De La Hoya, 35, could have acted more wisely in selecting a rival for what is expected to be his last fight. Should Oscar win, which he almost certainly will, his victory is likely to be dismissed as having come from picking on a little guy.

It was Jim Murray who said, “The good big man doesn't always beat the good little man, but that's the way to bet.” It is here.

Pacquiao does not agree. He said during a news conference that he watched De La Hoya's most recent bout against Steve Forbes at the Home Depot Center where De La Hoya, boxing at 150, failed to drop Forbes, pretty much a journeyman, and was wobbled a time or two.

“I think I'm faster and stronger than him, and I'm younger,” Pacquiao argued. “My speed is going to be a big factor in this fight. He has the advantage in height, but I believe that I am stronger than him.”

Concluded Pacquiao: “This is the focus of my boxing career, because this is a visit from God.”

The celestial reference aside, De La Hoya also should be coming calling, although he discounts his apparent advantages. “Size really isn't going to be that much of a big difference,” De La Hoya said.

Point of order: It is all the difference. The thing that struck me the first time I observed Oscar was how wide his shoulders were. He clearly was a man whose structure would permit him to get much heavier, which he has. He has boxed at as much as 160 (against Felix Sturm in June 2004).

Some months ago, promoter Bob Arum brought Pacquiao to a publicity function at a restaurant in Old Town. After standing next to Manny, I have to say of his listed height, “By whose ruler?” If he is 5-6½, I am Yao Ming.

For motivation, De La Hoya has the remarks of Freddie Roach, formerly his trainer and now Pacquiao's handler. Roach has said De La Hoya no longer can get off his punches and that Pacquiao could stop him.

“That started getting into my head,” Oscar said. “It started to become a challenge to me. And these are the type of events that really get me fired up. I understand the relentless style that Manny has; I understand the speed he has. So, for me, as a 35-year-old fighter, it really is a big challenge.”

MANNY PACQUIAO News Updates

Experts wonder if lightweight Manny Pacquiao, called the best boxer
pound-for-pound, can really handle Oscar De La Hoya.

Can Pacquiao weigh in with enough punch?

By DAVID A. AVILA
Special to The Press-Enterprise

When Oscar De La Hoya speaks, the entire boxing world listens.

After several weeks of speculation and media driven frenzy, De La Hoya finally announced his next opponent will be Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, despite grumblings from the boxing world about that choice.

The 10-time world champion from East Los Angeles said he will fight WBC lightweight titleholder Pacquiao because of his status among the media as the best boxer pound-for-pound and his conquests of three of Mexico's greatest boxers.

People are talking that Manny Pacquiao can beat me," De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs) said during a media conference call. "When Freddie Roach started saying, 'Oscar can't pull the trigger' or 'Manny Pacquiao, the fighter I trained can beat you,' it started to become a challenge to me."

De La Hoya and Pacquiao will meet Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a bout that's expected to sell out the arena and bring in more than 1.5 million pay-per-views.

Pacquiao, who has risen from the 112-pound flyweight division as a champion to capture the world titles in the super bantamweight, junior lightweight and lightweight divisions, now faces a former pound-for-pound champion who is five inches taller and fights three divisions higher in weight -- a disparity of 19 pounds.

Both boxers have made concessions for the fight. De La Hoya is dropping to 147 pounds and Pacquiao moving up. Both will fight with eight-ounce gloves, the glove weight Pacquiao normally uses. De La Hoya has used 10-ounce gloves for eight years.

"I think I can beat De La Hoya especially after I saw his last performance on the last fight," said Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs). "I think I'm faster and stronger than him and I'm younger."

In Pacquiao's last fight, he destroyed former WBC lightweight titleholder David Diaz with blistering speed and powerful combinations.

"Manny will knock out Oscar," said Roach, who trained De La Hoya for the Floyd Mayweather fight last year and now trains Pacquiao. "You can put Oscar's right hand in his pocket. It's useless."

De La Hoya captured the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and proceeded to win world titles in the junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight divisions.

"Size isn't going to be that much of a big difference," De La Hoya said. "I understand the relentless style that Manny has. I understand the speed he has. So for me, as a 35-year-old fighter, it really is a big challenge for me."

Experts don't all agree that it's a big challenge.

Riverside's Henry Ramirez, who trains heavyweight contender Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola and Josesito Lopez, said the pairing doesn't make a sporting sense, only money sense.

"You have a guy (Pacquiao) who barely beat Juan Manuel Marquez and he's going to fight a junior middleweight?" said Ramirez. "Here is a guy (De La Hoya) who fought Fernando Vargas, Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad and now he's relegated to fighting Pacquiao, who is a great fighter but there are other guys he (De La Hoya) could have fought -- like Antonio Margarito."

Boxing writer Steve Kim, of Maxboxing.com, favors Pacquiao because of the Filipino's speed and De La Hoya's injuries suffered against Steve Forbes last May.

"The 2008 version of De La Hoya is not the 1998 version, that's why I think this fight can be competitive," said Kim, who has followed both boxers from early in their careers. "Many think it's a circus act. But being ringside and watching Steve Forbes do some work, I saw Oscar did not have the reflexes or the quickness anymore."

The event is expected to be the most watched event of the year and will be co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.

"This fight has world-wide implications," Top Rank's Bob Arum said.
